Quite matter-of-factly as my 4 year old daughter watched me get dressed this morning she asked me why I always wore jeans? I'll admit, it caught me off guard. In a different way then when she inquired why mommy's undies went up her butt. It threw me because it hadn't really occurred to me that she noticed what I wore one way or another on a day to day basis. Like most child rearing revelations I seem to have, I've reached the conclusion that she is WAY ahead of me and I'm woefully dragging behind. So....I was left to ponder the question, "why do I always wear jeans?" I concluded that I probably do in fact need to branch out of my denim uniform, she was right, I do always wear them. Most importantly though, I was reminded once again that our daughters watch our every move. They look to us for the "norm", to set their barometer sort of speak. So, added to my list of things I want to teach her in life is the appreciation for clothing and style, and pride in her appearance. It didn't seem too long ago she was in the stage where she wanted to wear pajamas all day, every day. Those days are gone, and now she is starting to identify strongly with clothing, picking out her favorite colors and styles, and noticing mine. Developing their sense of style, confidence and pride in their appearance starts young, and as mothers it starts first with ourselves, we teach them that behavior every day. So, in conclusion, I'm wondering if all my reflections might warrant me buying a new pair of pants? FYI, after she asked me the question (as I was pulling on jeans), I immediately pulled them off and put on pants...just to show her I could!! Signed, Me (LV)
