My youngest walked in this morning, groggy, hair flying, and picking her nose. I said, "do you think you can stop picking your nose". She replied, in true toddler style, "NO". When I asked why she was picking it, she was simply, "I want to". WOW, wouldn't that be great....to just do what you wanted and your response would be as simple as, "I want to." No explanation needed, no apology, internal debate, or guilty defense. Just the plain facts...I wanted to, so I did. No energy spent on waffling around, mentally telling yourself you shouldn't but knowing you want to and ultimately will (I swear we do this mental grappling just because we think somehow it gets us off the hook for doing something we want to do but we could "rationalize" not doing....so we spend all this time rationalizing, and then do it anyway--like the sweater you MUST have but shouldn't because of the budget). My goal is to try this at least once today. I'm not going to do it in relation to picking my nose however :-), I'm thinking more like doing something nice for myself and if anyone asks I'll have my response ready, if only in my head---no mind games, just the simple concept, "I want to"!
