Does anyone wonder how the birthday parties for kids got to be SUCH a big deal? I feel "old" saying this, but back when I was a kid you were lucky if you had one birthday party where you got to have all your friends over....and every once in awhile you went to a party for another kid, but it wasn't a party for EVERY kid, EVERY year. Lulu went to her second party this year for a kid in her class on Saturday, he was turning 3, and every single kid in her class is planning a full on similar shindigs for their birthday's according to the buzz. It is crazy to watch these little kids, all of 3 years of age, buried in a sea of presents from the 15 kids in their pre-school class....totally overwhelmed and hyped up on sugar and adult mania. Anyway, we sort of informally decided no big b-day parties until age 5, so Ava will have her very first birthday party with kids in January. Lulu's birthday was actually today (her 3rd), and it was overwhelming enough for her with just family (and the inevitable sea of presents that comes from that relatively small group). I kept waiting for her to ask me where all the kids from her class where, but luckily she didn't so I dodged that guilt bullet. I'm not sure she even noticed anything except the birthday song, cake, and a pile of presents. People, what people?
I personally think we've all gone a little overboard with the huge productions for our little cherubs, how are things going to seem special anymore, we can't possibly top what we've now made the "norm". I can't imagine it is good for the kids, or good for us, the parents who have to stress about creating the coolest party so that our kids will fit in with all the other kids having "cool" parties. I wish I was exempt from all this self-imposed indulgency rule, but I'll admit I've already booked Ava's party for January and ordered invitations. How crazy is that?....and the worst part, I thought I was being super organized doing it so early (and did it mostly because the baby will be only weeks old when Ava's birthday comes), but when I called to booked the party place and apologized for narotically booking so early she said, "honey, if you waited any longer you wouldn't have gotten a date at all in January"!!!!!
Birthdays gone CRAZY. Signed, Me {lv}
