HA Melange friend the other day, when deciding between two dresses....both beautiful, but one perhaps more "practical" and generally wearable, mentioned that she wasn't sure why she always wanted a new cocktail party dress when really she only ended up attending one or two a year and it was hard to justify the expense when you don't wear it often. I was thinking about that comment, because it is so true.....most of us really don't go to that many cocktail or "events" every year, 1-3 maybe, tops. So splurging on a dress that can only be worn on that type of occasion seems a little indulgent, especially when it comes with a not so small price-tag. When we were younger perhaps these sort of indulgences seemed mandatory....of COURSE you had to look like a goddess, at all costs (which usually meant you got the visa out). But as we get older and you balance all the other things on the list, you tend to get more practical, and a bit wiser with your money I suppose.
It all boils down to the princess factor though. Remember dressing up as a little girl and we all wanted to wear something frilly and girly? We get to feel like a princess less and less as we get older. In my 20's I would dress up for party, or "hot" date, much more often, and had my princess fix on a fairly regular basis. Now....not so much. It might sound a little silly, but it is really fun to dress up and feel like a princess (goddess, queen, sex kitten, whatever your favorite adjectives). It takes us away from the normalcy of life for a moment and makes us feel extra, extra special. Hence, the justification for the beautiful cocktail dress that might hang in your closet for 364 days of the year. We give in to practicality so often, and bow to the needs of others so often as women (always putting our children first, spouse, obligations etc.), that once in awhile you just NEED to feel like the princess you are and indulge(technically I suppose it would be "queen", but I'm sticking with the youthful princess terms.)
