I think the christmas stocking is underrated. Instead of a quick pit-stop on the way to the real gift-opening activity, I like to see it as a time luxuriate in anticipation of what's next. What is next to come out of the stocking, and what is next to come throughout the day. Christmas day is often rushed and over far too soon, so I see the stocking-opening as a way to prolong the pleasure. And who doesnt love the look of a plump christmas stocking, full of tantalizing items that poke out of the top as if Santa just stuffed them there himself.
In addition to the usual chocolate and small, useful items one usually finds in a stocking, I love to add a few special gifts, and wrap them in tissue or a box with a bow to add a little glamor and surprise to the experience. Wrapping things also slows down the process, allowing you time to savor the pleasure of pulling off ribbons, and opening small boxes, and enjoying each small gift, followed by the anticipation of reaching down into the stocking for whatever is next! So fun!
When I was a child I used to get an orange in the toe of my xmas stocking, every year. Maybe Laura Ingalls Wilder would have relished an orange as a rare and exotic treat, but I'm afraid I did not. So every year my stocking was deceptively heavy and dissapointing at the same time.
So, as an adult I was out to change all that!
First of all, I replaced that orange from my stocking with a CHOCOLATE ORANGE. The kind you whack on the counter so the pieces fall apart. Now that is a proper finish to a xmas stocking!
Here are some more suggestions for a great stocking for that extra-cool woman in your life, mother? Daughter? Sister? Best Friend? Or even, dare we say, YOU? :
A beautiful piece of jewelry, like this fabulous "Saucy Leather Necklace" from Sartori Rue. Wrap this in pretty tissue and tie it with a bow so it comes out of the stocking as a little present in itself.
Or, these lovely colorful drop earrings, also from Sartori Rue. In a little box with a tiny ribbon, any lady on your list will love these!
A sweet little cami, in a netural color, rolled up. This will help fill out the stocking so it looks smooth and full.
Or, you could roll up a beautiful scarf and tuck that in, too.
(More chocolate.)
.
add a splash of luxury with this gorgeous belt from Eileen Fisher!
These colorful wristlets from Pistil!
Wrap up these silver blessing bars for a pretty, heartfelt stocking stuffer.
A piece of original artwork. A small painting or handmade card, handmade magnet or bookmark, adds character and sweet charm to your stocking.
Finally, if you want to make her cry with joy, put this beauty in a little box and tuck it right next to the chocolate. A sure-fire xmas hit.
I believe the stocking is an underappreciated and high enjoyable xmas tradition. I like it as a place to surprise and delight. I like it to not only hold a day's worth of chocolate and a great pair of socks, but also a treasure or two, and an unexpected twist.
Order today and it will still get there in time for your stocking stuffing!
