I live in a city with many wonderful art museums and galleries. Portland is a place where there is no shortage of artistic expression, and crowds of people dedicating their lives and careers to creating it.
But often, I find more beauty and power and meaning in the art I see living around me. Trees, rocks, mountains, and even the weather all create art installations of their own. And rather than using such obvious ways of promoting itself as glossy postcards and fashionable openings, these installations are just there, quietly waiting to be noticed, or not caring if they're noticed at all. They just are.
It's a great way to get zen, going on a walk in your city, away from the lights of downtown, and finding these secret art installations which are everywhere. Whenever you find one, it's yours, like a treasure hunt. And the soothing effect that this appreciation will give you will last the whole day, and longer. Much better than an advil!
Any time of year is a good time to appreciate nature, but winter brings its own unique benefits. There are very few leaves on the trees, and so all of the beautiful trunks and branch forms are exposed. You can see through the tree, with
no leaves, and whole new views are opened up in the winter that are hidden in the summer. Moisture from rain and ice create their own beauty. The moss that is dry in the summer is a lush, green carpet in the winter.
Even on a rainy day, go out on a quiet walk and find your favorite natural art. Take a picture and share it with a friend to inspire them to do the same! The world needs all the peace we can muster.
