There are a few great things about getting older, believe me. Besides the "wisdom" and the being "comfortable in our own skins" thing, there is also the beautiful reality of MORE DATE NIGHTS. We have two children, a 23-year old boy who lives with roommates, and a 15 year old girl who is already running her own life, and often at her best friend's house. Thus, before we thought it possible, the Mr. and I are enjoying a lovely stretch of summer evenings ALONE. We have not missed this opportunity, let me assure you. It has been about 20 years since we had a series of days without other people's needs taking priority. In fact, my husband's son was already 3 years old when we got together, so we've NEVER had a time like that, in our whole relationship. So...hallelujah, and bring on the date night! Our beautiful town is filled to the brim with interesting cafes, restaurants, little niches and nooks of cool design and delicious beers. The weather in Portland has been, dare I say, sublime? Usually in Oregon it goes from cold to hot without a whole lot of weather in between, but this year the spring and summer have blended into the perfect fusion of glorious sunshine and cooling breezes. In other words: the perfect pub deck weather. My advice? Get a sitter. Send the kids to camp. Call grandma. But do whatever it takes to put on that sweet little frock and special earrings you know you have waiting in your wardrobe, and go on a date, with the Mr. with the Mrs., the Ms, or with your favorite pals. It's good for the spirit, and it's what summer is all about!
