Wow, a middle-aged milestone. I went to the salon and got my hair colored AND my eyebrows, too! Being an almost-48 year-old is new to me, and I wasn't sure I was doing it right when I saw a recent picture and noticed how TIRED I looked! I had no real reason to be tired as the pic was taken when we were out to a nice Sunday coffee at a beautiful coffee shop, and I had just woken up and showered and was as fresh as I was gonna' get. When I saw that haggard face looking back at me I thought, ok, something has to change. How about my hair?
I have certainly colored my hair before. When I was in my 20's I was in a punk rock band. We regularly dyed our hair together, sharing bleach bottles and enthusiastically showing off our lack of hair-dying prowess with streaks of blue, red, and terrible yellow. I've cut all my hair off and I've grown it long. I've never been shy about my hair, and so when I grew out of my 20's I surprised myself by going totally natural. It felt light, feminine, understated and cooler than a riot of punk color, and I liked that I hadn't yet gotten grey hairs. Now, however being almost 48, I have plenty of grey, and it's not cute.
I love a silver fox. There are people who have totally grey hair and look AMAZING. I think I really will like to rock that look, when my hair is completely silver. For now, there are only course grey hairs that make me look tired, even when I'm not. This is definitely not the look I was going for, so I took the plunge and booked a salon day. The ladies at my salon are incredible. Super-style super-stars. They have actually won awards in hollywood for their abilities! So I knew I was in good hands, and trust me I NEED an award-winning stylist to tackle my issues.
Under their talented hands I had my hair cut into a simple, layered bob which looks modern, sassy AND appropriate. The color is a rich, warm brown with a few lighter streaks for dimension. The brows were waxed and colored to match. It all looks so much better, so natural, I think I'll become a regular! One of those ladies who go to the salon, sit under the dryer and get to know all about their stylists. I think I'm actually long over-due.
Besides, I'm not the only ex-punk rocker in there. I see my peers in the chairs next to me, their tatoos getting old along with them, but their hair looking KILLER. Thank god I never went in for tatoos, they are one aging issue I do not have to confront! Note to teen girls (and boys): tattoos that you think look sexy in your 20' become gross, unreadable blobs in your 40's, and will totally embarasss your kids.
So, good for me. I've joined the ranks of the salon ladies and I love it. We need a little pampering after all the work we do, and we deserve to take the time to breathe and nurture ourselves. And do a little dishing on the side!
Happy week, to all of you beautiful ladies! xoxoxoxo DR
