One thing I love about getting older is that now I can finally embrace the early bird inside me. No longer do I have to stay up late to be cool, and no longer do I have to get up late to recover from staying up late the night before. No, I have finally come into my own and joined the ranks of my middle-aged peeps! The Early Birds.
When I party now I party early. 4pm is a great time to have a drink and a nosh, as my mother would say in the 1970's. If you party at 4pm you can be done by 7:30 and still catch "Antiques Roadshow" at 8pm. Woot!
Forget Saturday night, its all about Saturday late afternoon at my house. The nabes came over this past Saturday afternoon at 4pm, and we were ready for them. A series of summer ales were lined up to be tasted and rated. We swished, swirled, smelled and sipped some delicious, hoppy, malted beers and washed them down with french bread and homemade hummus. It was a great time, and some great hummus too. I never knew it was so easy to make hummus, and now I'm obsessed. It's such a flavorful, filling snack with no dairy, no meat, no sugar, no additives of any kind. And if you make your own no plastic packaging either! Here's the recipe. Oh, and the winning beer of the night? Breakside IPA. Now that's an early bird special!!!
Black Olive Garlic Hummus
2 c canned chickpeas, drained and 2T liquid reserved
3 garlic cloves

6-8 black olives
pulse garlic cloves in food processor until minced. Add all ingredients (including the 2T reserved chickpea juice ) except the olives and blend until smooth. Then add olives and pulse till they are chopped up within mixture. Voila! Serve in a cute bowl with chips, bread or veggies.
