As you all know by now I am not a huge fan of Halloween. I have blogged before about the tacky aspect of the holiday, at a time of year when I'm ready to be cozy and cute, not ghoulish and garish. Nevertheless the holiday relentlessly rolls around every year, and I find myself either caving in and carving the pre-requisite jack-o-lantern, or taking a stand and ignoring Halloween altogether. I'm never thrilled with the look of kooky pumpkin faces on my porch, or the bat lights I bought about eight years ago, and am really glad to take them down the day after. But this year I discovered a technique that brings together the theme of a lighted, carved pumpkin with my love of cozy fall beauty.
The technique: you simply drill designs into your pumpkin. That's it. So easy, and SO effective! Who knew a drill could create such light and lacy designs? It's a lot easier than trying to cut out eyebrows or teeth which I would always slash and break resulting in an even more garish, frightening jack-o-lantern. Here we've dispensed with faces altogether, and created rows and scallops of holes, creating a display like mini strings of lights that I just love. You don't need directions, it's self-explanatory: simply clean out the inside of a pumpkin as usual, and then drill the design of choice, add candles and you're done!
