Oh boy, BIG movie recommendation!!! "The Women He's Undressed" tells the amazing story of Orry-Kelly, designer to the stars and to Hollywood. In the glamour days of tinseltown there were three geniuses who did ALL of the costumes for the major movie studios. There was Adrian, Edith Head, and Orry-Kelly. As a child I saw those names in the credits of all the movies, and didn't understand the name "Orry-Kelly", it didn't seem like an individual's name, more like a company, or a corporation, or some kind of collective. Then I didn't think anything more about it, honestly until the other day when I saw this fantastic documentary.
Orry-Kelly is indeed an individual, and a uniquely brilliant one. Unbeknownst to me, it was his clothes that have been some of the biggest artisitic influences in my life!!!! It was he who designed the clothes for the iconic movies "Now Voyager", "Auntie Mame",and "Irma La Douce". The sea foam green and black combinations in Irma la Douce were some of my first color obsessions. I saw that movie as a young teenager and the color was all I could remember. Shirley McClain's red hair, creamy skin, and that sea foam green and black lingerie against a Paris atelier-grey background...wow.
So this movie was an amazing revelation to me. Learning about this creative master, and hearing his amazing Hollywood stories, is a delicious treat. Enjoy the trailer, and watch it streaming on netflix! xoxoxo DR
