Thru the years Valentine’s Day has gotten a little weirded out in my head and I blame the French. My kids have always been in a bilingual French immersion school, and the French don’t really do Valentine’s Day in the way we do it. It’s a day “strictly for lovers” one French teacher told me as she clearly looked down on the notion of little kids exchanging Valentine’s cards. You guys are creepy, her eyes said.
Thankfully not every teacher has been quite as Frenchie about it, and they have for the most part, even if reluctantly, embraced it as a “day-o-love” in the more widely accepted Americanized way. So, each year I decode all the different rules for each kid’s class. Which teacher approves of the customary exchange, which teacher forbids sweets (clearly a secret communist), which teacher allows a party, which doesn’t. All the little cards get made, sometimes handmade, more often they are picked from the left over choices of the big box store because mommy ran out of time. That might describe this year….and last year. Possibly the year before that too. In fact, handmade cards may have been back in the early years now that I think about it.
Valentine’s Day finally comes and I am elated. Not because of the chocolate (perk for sure), or flowers (overpriced but still a nice perk), but because the prep and V-day anxiety is coming to an end and Valentine’s Day for me marks something equally exciting along with love, and friendship….it marks the kick off of Spring and SPRING CLOTHING. It’s my unofficial start of spring because it makes March feel imminently close, and March, even if there is snow on the ground, is SPRING (who needs to wait until the 21st).
It seems pretty fitting then that we should get this gloriously big Eileen Fisher spring shipment. Just coming back from Mexico has me excited for warmth, sunshine, bare shoulders, all things white (and linen), and contrasting crisp navy. There are some fantastic core pieces in this group that I’ve been waiting for….one of my favorites? This white linen tunic. I want to live in this! I love that you could wear it more sophisticated with tailored leggings and ballet flats, or unbutton it, roll up the sleeves and pop it over a fuchsia bikini top, some cool layered gold and/or beaded necklaces....espadrilles and a big hat and you've got summer in your hands. Happy Valentine's Day lovely ladies!
