OK, so now that we know candles are central to the hygge thing, let’s add a warm drink (or a cold drink). Doesn’t matter much what the beverage is, it’s the feeling of drinking something that comforts you, so that can be a warm tea or coffee right now because it’s chilly, but it could be a cool glass of ice tea with lemon and honey in the summer, or better yet…SANGRIA. It’s about enjoying those drinks that give you a sense of comfort and enjoying the ritual attached to that.
I adore my coffee in the morning. Love. It. I also love an afternoon pick me up around 2:00 p.m. and my first choice is this French tea that is divine (Mariage Freres). It’s also really expensive so I’ve been cheap and haven’t purchased it since I ran out a month or two ago. I miss it and as my inspiration to enjoy this ritual more, I’m going to splurge and buy more. Good tea is amazing.
A glass of wine at night is awfully comforting too. Do you know that for YEARS I had a rule that I didn’t drink any alcohol when John was out of town? Which was pretty much a LOT so I was on alcohol restriction. I guess I was scared that with all the stress of 4 kids under the age of 7, I might have one glass, which would turn into 4 and then I’d roll over and crush my baby in my wine stupor. That was my actual fear. I probably should have just enjoyed a glass.
Now, happily, that fear is gone. Stress is less for one, no infants, I’m not nursing, or pregnant. I can enjoy my glass of wine and yes, it’s VERY comforting to have a great glass after a long day.
So today’s hygge contribution is the ritual of the enjoyed beverage. Take an extra moment to enjoy your ritual, and if you don’t have one, maybe add one (or two).
I had to run the kids around to 15 million different activities today, one of which was Taekwondo for Gia . The last two classes have been all about “what you would do if a stranger tried to take you.” The whole thing creeps me out on one hand, but on the other hand I’m glad someone is talking about it concretely because I know it’s important. Anyway, Gia showed me a move after class and said, “here’s what I do if someone tried to grab me and take me somewhere.” Self-defense is such a good thing for kids to learn young! I asked Romeo if he wanted to take the class too, his response? “I don’t like people looking at my feet?” Huh? I didn’t even have the energy to pick that one apart.
Then I had to go to three different Ace Hardware stores to find gallon sized Elmer’s Glue. If you have a girl between the ages of 7 and 12, chances are they are obsessed with this slime craze. It’s the worst fad EVER. Basically the kids force you to buy obscene amounts of glue, then they mix it with borax, and use all your good cake decorating food coloring, and create slime. I’m still picking some ill-made slime done months ago by Lucia off my sofa. I loathe the stuff. It’s messy, and they use up all my Tupperware to store the crap in. I wish the fad would end. Now. Meanwhile, Gia’s convinced her teacher to let their class make slime one day as a “science experiment”, and promised that “her mommy” would provide all the supplies. Huh? Hence, the hunt for gallon glue (sold out everywhere).
So tonight, in honor of a sense of peaceful comfort after a long day, I’m going to enjoy my wine, and snuggle my feet into some darling Little River Socks (because I don’t really like people looking at my feet either, but mostly just because I need a pedicure bad).
Signed, ME {lv}
