Costa Rica has a lot of monkeys. Like, loads and loads of monkeys. We were driving to Tamarindo today and noticed a few cars pulled over to the side of the road so we slowed down and then realized they were pulled over because there was literally a highway up above the actual road, that consisted of monkeys running along the electric lines that paralleled the road. A couple of tourist vans stopped to show their tourists (I think real Ticos would be about as impressed as us watching a squirrel climb a tree in the States). A ton of monkeys, just running along one after another, totally oblivious to the world below....it was pretty cool to see. This pic is a little dark and gloomy, it was just before a downpour (which happens once a day and it usually clears right back up after that.)
They also have loads and loads of mosquitos in the rainy season, a season which we have just embarked on. The skeets like some people, and totally ignore others. They think Ava and I are a big piece of their favorite cake. John is day old cooked greens--they just aren't interested. Just because I'm mean I tell him it's because he has SO much grey body hair, that really gets under his skin. It means me saying, "close the door"--a phrase which I've said no less than 5,876 times since we got here--is just an annoyance to him and often completely ignored.
It's day 5, and I'm pretty sure there are only a handful of places on my body the skeets haven't bitten. This pic below is taken at the most beautiful time of the evening...which is why of course the mosquitos come out...they aren't dumb. I mist myself with bug repellent and I wrap myself up in a big old scarf, that covers neck, arms and chest, and try to only have my eyes peeking out. That's why scarves are on my essential packing list. I have more scarves in my bag than shorts I think. I use them to protect against bugs, prevent a sunburn, keep off the chill, swimsuit coverup....I'm like Macgyver with the scarf, there isn't a lot I can't transform it into....give me a scarf and a tampon and I'm sure I could bust out of prison.
My scarf goes into my other essential...the tote I brought to Costa Rica-- the Velvet Isabelle tote-- and in it goes an arsenal of stuff essential to a day out during summer. It's been fantastic, LOVE this bag!
Tamarindo was the outing today, which was fun, but when you just spent the previous day doing nothing, doing anything seems like a lot of work. Picking a restaurant took forever. We sat down, decided there were too many flies to sit outside, went inside and then decided it smelled funny so we left. We opted for the beach restaurant, which had an amazing view but they felt the need to blast 90's club music at 2 in the afternoon. We've noticed in general the beach restaurants pick bad music. Food was pretty good but that might have been because my expectations were pretty low considering their music choice.
Being back home with a gorgeous sunset was a relief from the driving, tourist energy of Tamarindo and the kids fighting on the long ride home.
All I want is some bug itch cream and to read my book, is that too much to ask?
