"It's not what you think, it's not what you say, it's what you DO that makes a difference." Your day to day actions, that is what will make the biggest impact in your life.
Today we spent half the class broken up into small groups and teaching each other 8 sequences. We each taught, and then received feedback. Totally unnerving to do something you aren't good at, in front of strangers. You know that feeling you got as a kid when you had to get up in front of the class, or you were put on the spot? That feeling that mostly as adults we work really hard to avoid? That's the feeling I had today. But we all survived.
The second half of class was a lecture on the philosophy of yoga, and we talked about the first limb of the 8 limbs of yoga...specifically the principle of "do no harm" This was an interesting conversation, because "do no harm" includes doing no harm to others, but also doing no harm to yourself. There's the obvious things...like don't physically harm someone, but there are all the ways in which we emotionally harm other people, and ourselves. One homework assignment given to us this week is to journal on the concept of "do no harm" and see how we can personally make strives toward the concept. I'm going to work on compassion, first toward myself, and then toward others--because I think sometimes it's my lack of compassion that does harm--to myself and others.
My other goal this week, along with taking 5 yoga classes, is to do some meditation. I bought a meditation pillow months ago and it hasn't gotten enough use. I'm going to specifically do some compassion style meditation, and I think that should tie in nicely.
Here's to a soulful Monday and kick off to the week. I'm going to try and start out the week with the intention of bringing peace and kindness to everyone I come in contact with. First step....set your intention for the day, and that will set off your actions.
