First off, the weather report lied. It did start out reasonably sunny, but it became rainy by 1 p.m. We did some googling last night and came across a UK Telegraph article online that listed Nin (Queen’s Beach) as one of the Croatia’s top 10 beaches. Number 2 to be exact. It was only a 15 minute drive and we figured it must be reasonably good right? Wrong. Total bust. I’m not sure if it’s just that the Croatian beaches aren’t as nice as other beaches in other countries—so comparatively this beach IS in fact top of the list in CROATIA—OR maybe the Telegraph has bad taste in beaches. Not sure, all I know is that we got there, walked down to the beach, and then turned around. Most of the beaches here have chunky rocks vs. sand because the waves aren’t big enough to make sand…instead they make uncomfortable sized rocks that require shoes and chairs. You can try sitting on a towel if you don’t mind piercing your back end. Not the end of the world, just giving you a visual. The weather wasn’t great (clouds) so I think if it was sunny the water would definitely have been nicer—it’s very clear and blue when it’s sunny-- but still the beach itself was not very nice.
The little tiny town of Nin was cute, and we did stroll thru, but definitely not worth a major detour. There were some 2000 year old Roman ruins which were kind of cool, but really, they just looked like a handful of rock piles with sporadic Roman carvings and one man-made column with some Roman ruins atop to demonstrate what it would have been like. Maybe I’m being a hater, but to me the highlight really was the bag of paprika potato chips I bought at the convenience store on the way out. Yum.
So then we came back home, and hung about for a few hours. I did an online yoga class (wasn’t terribly impressed), and then the older girls BEGGED to go jet skiing. I’m not a fan of them doing anything that involves fast moving engines because 1) they are pretty irresponsible, and 2) see #1. It was cloudy, and starting to rain, but they begged, arguing that it was the best time to go because there was no one on the water to crash into. Good point. So, they shared a jet ski and did a 30 minute stint on the water while we waited on shore. The jet ski guy that was monitoring them had to speed out to them at least 3 times to tell them to not go so far out, not go so close to shore, and/or to slow down. It was 30 minutes that aged me about 3 solid years.
We decided that we are done with Vir, and that tomorrow we’ll hit the natural park that is about an hour away, then tomorrow night will be the last night we spend here and we’ll head to Split a day early. Not terribly excited to double pay for that night, but also sort of bored with this area. Not terribly impressed with the beaches, or the food….or the general vibe here. Hoping for more as we move south! Maybe I’m being a beach snob, but I think there has to be better ones in this country or it wouldn’t be getting beach buzz at all.
And for the record, I was relatively grouchy all day because I jinxed myself yesterday saying that I saw the light at the end of the jet lag tunnel. Last night I had a HORRIBLE sleep. What was worse is everyone else slept fine, and John was snoring obnoxiously, and otherwise making my terrible sleep even worse. I spent hours in that semi-awake-middle-of-the-night-haze where you think of things and everything you think of seems a 10x bigger deal, more stressful, and otherwise “totally funky”… I am going to make myself a melatonin and wine cocktail tonight and hope for better.
