First off, I just want to say that I slept 10 hours last night. That’s 1-0. It was G-L-O-R-I-O-U-S. We all slept late, and then packed the van until it was near busting. Not sure how we managed to explode in size in 5 short days, but now we barely fit. We’ve already acquired too much stuff….note the big cooler and pool floaty.
Our drive was an easy 2.5 hours, and along the way we stopped at one of the many fruit stands and bought a huge watermelon, complete with the vines still attached. They grow them local, so you would think they’d be dirt cheap, but it was still about an $8 watermelon, which kind of seems steep right? Although, I’ve bought maybe 10 watermelons in the last 2 months, at $3-4 a pop and they all sucked…..I need to stop buying watermelons at Trader Joe’s because other than being sort of red and vaguely resembling it, they really don’t come close to the real thing. This watermelon was AMAZING….seriously, kicked the ass of every watermelon I’ve eaten in years.
We arrived in Omïs around 1:30, and got settled into our new apartment. This trip is a bit different from our other long Summer trips because usually we tend to stay in one location for 2-3 weeks at a time. This time, we are in and out within 4-5 days (sometimes shorter). It adds a layer of work for sure. We unpacked and then drove into town which is beautiful….set smack up against sheer mountains. We had a nice lunch, and strolled around. I snapped a pic of a couple of signs in this adorable natural bath product store, one that said “Use things, not people. Love people, not things.” The other said: Working Hours From: Since We Come, and To: Until We Leave”. I love how things here feel much more chill, there is no hurry in the air because everyone seems to be on vacation (whether they are or not.)
The beach right down from our house is beautiful. Ava found a Starfish that latched onto her shoe. The entire area reminds me of Lake Como, Italy, but a little less lush, and more expansive looking (and of course, the architecture in Italy is much more beautiful). I found oatmeal at the grocery store, and maybe what looks to be sweet potatoes, so there’s hope that I might not starve. Plus now that I know the watermelon is life changing, I might just live on that (and the figs, which are also growing everywhere and totally fantastic.)
Romeo bought a darling little piece of art today in the town. We couldn’t understand much of what the owner of the shop explained, except that the artist was an art professor in Split. We give the kids each a weekly allowance while they are here to spend on what they want to spend it on, but we are REALLY trying to encourage them to support local artisans vs. acquiring plastic crap from all the tourist shops (that no doubt import said crap from China). So far Romeo has done a great job. He asked me why I hadn’t bought anything yet and I told him I don’t get allowance, that’s why.
We already like this area better….the vibe is good, the beaches cleaner and nicer. Can’t wait to explore tomorrow.
