It's Sunday here, 2 p.m. in the afternoon. We've finally arrived. As a reminder, we (Lucia and I) left our house at 7:15 a.m. on Friday, and it's now Sunday at 2 p.m. Thai time, which means it's midnight on Saturday night back home. We were traveling for something like 40 hours. After leaving our house Friday we almost immediately got derailed when we found the first of our three flights had been cancelled. After negotiating with Alaska Air, and trying to rebook all the legs, the best we could do was going to LAX instead of SFO and flying out to Hong Kong on a flight 10 hours later than we had planned (11:30 p.m.) and then ultimately arriving in Bangkok mid-day on Sunday instead of Saturday night as planned.
We spent a LOT of time sitting around the airport. A lot of time eating airport food, then a lot of time in the air. Lucia and I got on well though, and had some good laughs. She's quite funny actually, when the moody teen mode is clicked to "off". In one of our many discussions, she pointed out that I had some mustache hairs (the lighting in the airplane by the window was quite good). Then she pointed out that I could easily get rid of my "strawberry legs". Huh? Apparently those little black dots aren't just dark hair follicles, they are built up oils around the follicle and if you exfoliate a lot they will ultimately go away. She could totally be making it up, but she said it with such authority that I'm going to start exfoliating my legs asap just in case.
The other problem is that flying for so long (in the air a total of 18 hours) my legs, literally, blew up like elephants. It's scary. I even wore my compression socks and drank my electrolytes. What gives? They are positively scary. Like grandma scary. I don't even know what to do except let them deflate over timem. I would include a pic but they are like wild beasts that I don't want to be immortalize with a picture.
We are staying at the W Bangkok which is a super cool hotel. Upon arrival we were immediately handed this cool blue no stem wine glass filled with a mystery drink (some rose hibiscus tea that was like drinking the nectar of the gods), and everyone started catering to our every need. Lucia declared she wants to live here, in this hotel....not Bangkok, just this hotel. Not a terrible idea, the W hotels are pretty wonderful. I had a yummy drink at the bar (not even sure what it was but it was good), and some small bites and then our room was ready. Lucia spent 45 minutes in the shower and the girl was ha-ppy. Nothing like airport grime to make you feel gross and a great shower to make you feel amazing.
I went back to pick up Ava from the airport in the afternoon and amazingly I actually found her which seemed like good luck since it was hard to find where her flight exited from immigration (there are three big immigration exits), and the airport internet was a little spotty (and her French SIM card wasn't going to work in Thailand so we had to rely on internet). I think the travel gods suspected I needed a break though, and I got her back safe and sound. We had a dinner at the hotel and I was dead asleep by 7:30 Thai time. The girls went swimming and probably would have tried to hit the "W" scene (and the whole marketing theme of this hotel is built around having a cool young vibe going on so I'm sure it was enticing to them), but I suspect eventually they got tired and came back to the room. I was sleeping though, so that was easy not to worry about.
Can't wait to hit the town today and see what Bangkok has to offer.
