The scary thing is, I got a little behind in writing, and I think I might have skipped a day, but I can't figure out exactly what we did. I guess if I can't remember, then it must have been a boring day, still, my recollection capabilities are lacking for sure. This is why I have to write down the details as they happen, because clearly I wouldn't remember otherwise.
We started the day today at the Chill Inn, which I was hopeful would kick us off right. This coffee sign made me laugh. Last night as we
were driving home from dinner, everyone with their feathers ruffled and irritated for some reason, I noticed that it was a full moon (almost). I also noted my cramps, and general extreme frustration. Ohhhhh. Lightbulb moment. That makes sense. I told the girls that I needed to stop at a 7 Eleven to try and get some tampons, and that's when Ava says, "yeah, I'm going to need them too", and Lucia echoed the same from the back seat. Triple ohhhhhh. It's all making sense, the fact that I literally wanted to kill them the last couple of days? Totally normal. We stopped, and while there were probably 10 different brands of panty liner options, there was literally only OB tampons, one size, in a tiny box of 8. Weird right? Where are all the tampons??
Anyway, Chill Inn was a lovely way to start the morning, with a gorgeous view and at 9:00 a.m. in the shade, it's almost perfect. After breakfast we headed back to Fisherman's village, which has become one of our favorite beaches. We decided to go and have manicures and pedicures, and I added in a leg massage. There are a ton of different places that overlook the ocean and it's a beautiful way to relax. I'm not sure how long the pedi/mani thing will last in the sand and ocean, but it was relaxing and fun, and totally worth the $60 for all of us.
Next we hit a restaurant called "Karma Sutra", that had a picture of avocado toast on the sandwich board which immediately lured Lucia in. Turns out, they had no avocados (they are hard to get here), but Lucia found a French bread bacon sandwich that she ordered and fell in love with. It was a very cool place, and we sat and had a long and lazy lunch. The girls fell in love with the world's scrappiest dog that hung around while we were there. Literally, this dog had one eye, and scars all over her body. She was clearly old, and had definitely had many liters. She rolled around in the middle of the road, and would just stand there, so I'm guessing that's how she got so many scars. I personally witnessed at least two motorbikes almost crash right into her. What cracks me up is that the girls seem to have such empathy and adoration for every little scrappy creature out there, but if you listen to them cutting up
someone on Instagram, they are ruthless. One eyed dogs are safe though.
It was late afternoon, and we decided that maybe we should go check out one of the waterfalls in the area. This was a two hour adventure that resulted in no actual water. Definitely not falling water. We followed the sign for what we thought was the waterfall. Parked, paid the parking fee, and followed the wood signs toward the falls. We were the only people there. That was tip off number one. The trail was rough, with these ropes strung tree to tree to help you balance on the trail or help you pull up the trail when needed. The jungle was so hot and stuffy, and the sounds of bugs was intense. Eventually we get to the end of the trail and we can see where there might have been a waterfall, but now only a tiny puddle of water, and no actual falling water at all (we're at the end of the dry season). The entire time we were nervous a cobra would appear on the jungle trail. There are a TON of cobra show signs all over the island, seems to be a big thing. We haven't been to one of the shows, but one thing is clear, there are an abundance of cobras here.
We eventually made our way back home, swam, and then got dressed for dinner. You have to be sitting at a restaurant at about 5:45 p.m. to catch a full sunset, and the restaurant we found (via our landlord) was 20 minutes away. Right on the beach, it was called Ocean View (not terribly original name, but fitting), and it was great. A beautiful view, and we were there until way past dark. It was the slowest service EVER. At one point, at least 30 minutes after sitting down, maybe more like 45....we were sipping our drinks and Lucia eyes a waiter with food walking in our general direction. Lucia got really excited and exclaimed, "oh, maybe that's our food coming, I'm starving." My reply was, "it might be, if we'd actually ordered." She just about had a meltdown. We spent loads of time talking about ways for Ava to lure in her crush, a boy in one grade higher than her at the boarding school who is British and she's never actually spoken to, but she's named him Timothy in the absence of knowing his real name. All my ideas were lame and laughable (per the girls), but we had fun talking about it.
Very lovely day. I miss John and the little kids so I'll be excited to go home, but I'm also sad. I love being here with the girls, and wish I could teleport the rest of the family here.
