You know what I realized today? It’s possible to go thru the day without ever really relaxing your body fully. This is true EVEN if you go to yoga. I took a morning class and was laying on my back for the beginning of class. It usually starts out like that and quickly moves into your standard warm up flow. The teacher tried harder than normal to center everyone on the mat, and I realized that even though I was laying there, and I seemed pretty relaxed it wasn’t until I REALLY concentrated on melting into the floor that I realized that I had been holding a lot of tension in my shoulders, upper back and neck. When I let that go there was this immediate softening and it felt like a big sigh of a relief, BUT I also realized that usually I get to that stage only at the END of class in shivasana if I’m lucky, but usually not at ANY other time. That's in part because I'm anticipating the next move, so even if I'm trying to be mellow in the beginning of class, my body knows it's about to move. I probably don’t really get fully relaxed until I pass out at night from total fatigue which is more like a narcoleptic experience than a conscious relaxation process. I don’t know what that all means, just that I find it interesting that it’s so hard to fully relax my body and that it might be good to do it more often—at least for a few minutes here and there. Maybe that would help my stress levels?
It’s mid-week….already. I am currently obsessed with two things. First, these new Swahili bracelets. I love them, I want to wear at least two at all times. They are just super cute on, ,and I like them stacked and contrasting. I’ve got a thing for bracelets, I love them piled up, and while I totally acknowledge it might drive other people batty, I love the soft sound they make when they hit against each other. I’m big on my wrist candy.
The second thing I’m obsessed with is my new hair machine (it's called a Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer Hot Air Brush.) It’s like a brush, curling iron and flat iron all got together and had a baby. You use it on your hair when it’s wet, and sort of “brush out” your hair while simultaneously drying it, and the barrel is ceramic so it gets nice and hot and smooths everything out. It’s better than flat ironing because it’s not stick straight and has body to it. All I know is that it’s the best $40 I’ve spent on anything hair related in forever. I actually bought it for Lucia for Christmas after reading about it on a blog, borrowed it a couple of times and then became a convert. There you go, obsession #2
I also made a red velvet cake today, for Ava’s birthday, and I have no idea if tasted ok since I can't eat gluten, BUT it looked pretty. I love making cakes, it’s a little bit therapeutic. Mostly, I just like frosting cakes...coloring the frosting, designing it, making the flowers. Today wasn't a masterpiece (my buttercream was a little too soft to hold flowers well), but the homemade cherry filling was pretty good--that was my twist to the traditional red velvet. Always go to have a twist.
Lastly, I will just say that the new Prairie Underground Mid-Hedgerow hoodie in peacock is a really, REALLY good color. It just makes me happy to look at it. It reminds me one the classic Prairie Underground Cloak hoodie that I bought in this color about a gazillion years ago and I wore it to death. I actually like this style sweatshirt better, it's a little more mellow, easier to wear I think than the cloak style--plus the length is better. This might be the excuse I need to buy myself a new sweatshirt.
