I had a great yoga class with my guru this morning. I just love this teacher, he’s amazing and every time I take one of his packed classes (I'm not the only follower) I get so much out of it. If he decides to open an Ashram somewhere I’m packing up my things.
Anyway, his message today was about Winter, the season and what it brings to our bodies and mind. His point was that we can get lost in the excitement of the “new” year, and all the things that we need to pledge to DO, and all the ACTIONS we need to take to make those things happen. The competing pull though, is the season itself, which speaks to our heart and body to be quiet, withdraw energy in order to nurture and strength the deep roots—to contemplate and listen. The short darker days, the colder temps, all signaling the body to retreat, to rest and restore. Now I know what you are thinking, “what? I’m suppose to wait until spring to burst forth with all my awesome new year’s resolutions, ideas and efforts?” NO….he’s not suggesting that you’ve got to be dormant until spring, BUT he’s suggesting that we listen to the pull of the season and use this time to contemplate, and restore, so that we have the energy we actually need to go the places we want to go. That’s a pretty good message right?
I’m taking it to heart, and taking this week to be more contemplative about my efforts, and do more nurturing things for myself. Feed my roots, so that I have strength because I do have big plans for this year, and they are going to take a LOT of energy.
So even though it’s Monday, and many of us feel this need to jump out of the “week gate” with ferocity, I hope we can also simultaneously carve out something nurturing for ourselves today. Whether it’s a special warm drink that you love, a 20 minute cat nap at your desk, a moment to meditate, or just 5 deep conscious breaths in and out.
Linda Trent jewelry arrived today, and it’ll be here for a hot minute and then gone again I’m sure. It’s so pretty, easy to wear (and lightweight which I love). The heart earrings are going to be perfect for Valentine’s day gifts, and even though that “seems” like a long time from now, we all know we’ll blink and we’ll be buying candy hearts.
I know I talk about my life changing favorite book EVER, “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker, but I’ll talk about it again since SLEEP is going to be my nurturing thing today. No, I’m not going to sleep during the middle of the day (although that sounds lovely actually), but I am going to organize my entire day around the objective of going to sleep by 10 p.m. This is a strategic decision that has to be made early in the day OR it’ll be 9 p.m. and I’ll still have 3 hours left of work to do and my “goal” goes out the window. Sleep is the best thing for you EVER!!
