It's the last week of February, which officially means, March is RIGHT around the corner. This gets me in the mood for some spring cleaning. Time to start prepping for the new season to come since March is almost here and March = Spring. I know it's early, but I've waited before, and then all of a sudden it's a rush and I'm shoving wool sweaters into bins and searching for my spring stuff.
So I'm starting on my closet first. First thing I did was to pull everything out of my closet and anything I haven't worn in a year gets a super hard look and theoretically goes in the "to go" pile. There was an article in Elle that said, "If you haven't worn it in a year, what makes you think you're going to wear it now? Don't hoard items under false pretenses." I think that sort of sums it up. It's really easy to make excuses about why you did or didn't wear it, or why you "might" wear it at some point. The truth is though, if you didn't wear it, you most likely won't because if you really think about it, there's a REASON why you didn't wear it.
Cocktail dresses, dressy outfits and formal wear are excluded from this rule. I hold on to pieces for years, and I can go a year or two (or more) before looking at it again. Good pieces are worth hanging on to.
I do have some other exceptions to the one year rule that I found. Really nice pieces that for whatever reason just didn't make the rotation this year but I know I can't part with. Example, a double oversized Margaret O'Leary cashmere wrap with fringe. I didn't wear it this winter, but it's a keeper for sure. I did however, part with a Prairie Underground top that I've held on to for two years, and haven't worn it once. It's darling, but in the end just doesn't fit me quite right. There's something about it that doesn't work on me but it's subtle so when I see it's cuteness hanging in the closet, I think I must be able to find a good outfit for it right? I can't though, and I won't. I decided not to hoard it any longer. Not everything you buy is a winner, but it's so much worse if you let it just take up space and energy in your closet when someone else can use and love it.
Truthfully that's the only thing I did toward my spring cleaning/March organization so far, and it took me a long time (and I'm only 3/4 the way thru and that might be generous). Tomorrow I'm going to mock up a list of all the other spring cleaning things I want to knock out and then a reasonable schedule to do it. Plus I'm definitely going to need some reward at the end of it to help motivate me (something new and Springy maybe?)
