Women Helping Women. It's my favorite event of the entire year, and we decided not to wait until we could do it in both the store AND the website. We'll hopefully be doing it in the store soon enough, but we thought kicking it off now when there is so much need, makes sense.
It's an event we've done for the past 20 years. The entire thing is focused around all of us doing our Spring cleaning and pulling from our closets the items that we no longer wear, that perhaps don't fit, or maybe we are just not loving anymore. We gather all those things, and we take them to the nearest domestic violence shelter. In return we give everyone a nice discount so they can shop for something fun.
This year, we are asking everyone to do their annual clean out. Many of us have extra time (even if only on the weekends), so it's the perfect time. Clean out those closets, don't hold on to things you aren't wearing, and know that everything you give away can be used and loved by someone who really, really needs it. Most donation centers aren't open under the quarantine rules, so you'll need to hold on to the items for a bit longer, but having them ready and waiting to drop off will allow those organization to get the influx of clothing they will desperately need when things reopen.
Given the current state of quarantine and "lock-down life", women suffering in domestic violence relationships (and their children) are in even a more heightened danger. Domestic violence thrives on isolation. Abuse is about power and control. Women force to be home with their abusers feel even more isolated and scared, and that is where organizations like the National Domestic Violence Hotline becomes so important. It's a place where women can reach out 24/7 for support on phone lines and via text messaging. That is why this year we are donating 5% of each sale to NDVH to help with the immediate and growing need.
We are going to make each day this week fun, with extra little perks for each order placed. We hope you'll find time to spring clean your closet, and support this cause.
Our new challenge this week has to do with reaching out to new people each day. Old friends, new friends, your mailman, the UPS driver (how about a sticky note on the door that says "hope you are having a good day)! The focus is really about reaching out, beyond the little circle you've created, and finding opportunities to connect with different people. I'm gong to kick it off today by calling my youngest sister. Oddly, I haven't talked to her in weeks and weeks and WEEKS--we've exchanged brief texts, but I think a proper call is in order. I adore her of course, but for whatever reason we just don't talk as much as I'd like. It seems easy enough, but I guess it hasn't been in the past since clearly I haven't talked to her recently. This week's challenge will feel good!
Happy Monday wonderful people!
