First off, I made meringues today...sugar FREE meringues. I ordered powdered monkfruit sugar, and substituted that in and it actually worked just fine. That was a highlight of the day (also, a tiny 20 minute fraction of the day). The rest of the minutes were filled with all kinds of life stresses. One big one? Ava is a month (conservatively) behind on home school assignments. ADHD teens with no structure right now are not fairing well. I spent five solid hours on English and Political Econ with her and we went painfully week by week, assignment by assignment. Oh the fun. I also feel very strongly that I could barely make it thru a high school English class present day. It certainly didn't feel that hard when I was in high school, but then again, I might have been blowing half of it off, I can't remember.
What I realized today though, as I was sitting down to work AFTER the harder work of trying to keep Ava on task, was that despite the excitement about reopening this Friday, I'm quickly realizing it brings with it all kinds of new stresses. It's the reminder that you solve one problem and you replace it with others right? These past eight weeks we could do nothing but lament NOT being open, and worrying about what that meant, and letting the stress of being closed be something that was going to be solved by being open.
Clearly, that's not quite true. The stress of being closed is about to be replaced by the stress of being open, which could be better, but on the other hand, might still be really stressful. I guess my only point is that we have to simply remind ourselves to deal with whatever is on our plates right now, and try hard not to pretend that things will be substantially different when "x" happens. The truth is, life has more stressors than we can expect, and the only way to navigate them is to accept then, and expect more to come our way.
So bring on the reopening stress, I welcome it, as long as we get to see everyone's smiling faces.
I'm also welcoming the cutest new Not Soap, Radio line that we just got in. Quirky soaps, scrubs and lotions, that make you smile, but also smell wonderful and feel wonderful on the body. We all need more "little luxuries" in our life that make us happy and this is a perfect example! They make awesome gifts too!
