The Coolness of Tonlé

We've just got in a small and special group from Tonlé and it has reminded me of the absolute coolness of this company.  This is a designer that we felt so good buying from because from start to finish the company cares first for the earth, and the people of the earth.  It's not about profit and convenience over everything else like SO much of the garment industry is.

They are a zero waste company. That's right. Zero.  So what does that mean?  They basically use all pre-consumer remnants for their styles, and then the left overs from that are used down to the last tiny bit (even making stuff like handmade paper).   The big brand garment industry has a staggering amount of pre-consumer fabric waste/excess that is then re-sold in Cambodia--which is where Tonlé finds their fabric and then they make it their mission to use every last scrap of it.

They use all natural dyes, and use the left over dye material to fertilize their garden (did you even know that was possible?) 

The clothing is all hand made in Cambodia, by a team of artisans that make each piece and everything about the process has fairness and respect in mind.  Fair trade, fair wages, and all kinds of programs to support the works on their team (certain health care benefits, free lunches, vacation time and cross-skill training so employees get a chance to develop skills they are interested in and can carry out into the world should they want/need to).  

Basically, everything Tonlé does as a company strives to create as little of a carbon footprint as possible, and provide the maximum amount of respect and care for its workers.  The styles are so easy and versatile, and the prices are amazing.  I'm crazy about all three tops we got in---they are so airy and breezy (slightly sheer) and perfect for summer and warmer months when you want nothing clinging to you but want a little coverage!  The kaftan is a favorite too, again, airy and breezy--perfect for anything from dinner al fresco with friends, to pool side coverage.  LOVE.

Uncomfortable Change, Microblading & Summer Cover Ups

Yoga was tough today.  All around.  It was definitely a day I felt like I might just have to NOT do one more forearm plank.  The message was good though, it was all about how uncomfortable any change was, and how even the changes you want to make, need to make, or are otherwise totally welcome, come with the uncomfortableness of making the change and losing your old patterns.   We all gravitate toward what we know, good or bad, and that makes the "new" inherently tougher to embrace.  It was a good reminder, and I for one need constant reminders.

The big news....I've got an appointment for microblading Saturday morning.  I'm super excited, and I'm really, REALLY hoping that it looks ok.  In my head it'll be great because my brows will always be perfect--no maintenance needed.  As it is now, I usually grab my eyebrow pencil and do them in the car rearview mirror at a stoplight and then inevitably they look a little wonky in some way or another.  Maybe if we did them in a real mirror each morning and took some time it would be fine, but that NEVER happens.  So here's to hoping they will look amazing.  Downside is that you aren't suppose to do any super sweaty workouts for 4 days (so no hot yoga), AND they look freakishly dark the first few days until they flake off and mellow out.  So it may not be my best looking weekend unfortunately, but that's the price.  Come Tuesday or Wednesday though, look out...I'll keep you posted.

Lastly, my mission is to start stock piling light and airy things for summer that will protect my skin.  We're going to Greece and Turkey, and it's going to be warm and sunny--really warm, and really sunny.  I'm not sure if its and age thing or what, but last summer was a freaky intro into pigment malfunction.  I do not need even ONE more sunspot, and I've now spent all winter trying to get rid of them so I'm going to do everything short of carry around an umbrella this summer (and I'm not even totally opposed to that).  I'm looking to find light and airy fabrics, with as much coverage as possible, AND hats.  The new Margaret O'Leary skirt caught my eye--perfect example of coverage, yet light and airy.  I also want one of the Shebobo hats (super silly name, cute hats). I'm going to pop that brim out and  protect my face (along with 10 layer of SPF).  I'll admit, I'm super jealous of all the women I see who have gorgeous olive skin and tan perfectly the second they are out in the sun.  I'm just a sea of sun spot freckles.  Ugh.

Cards, Burmese Food & Layering Perfection

I’m currently obsessed with cards.  Real cards that you hold in your hand and stick in the mail with a stamp (remember those things?)  Not ecards, or emoji-cards, or anything electronic. Not to be hating on the modern era, but I really do miss the days when people sent mail, and your mailbox might actually contain something other than junk mail or catalogues.  I get SO excited when I get a card in the mail...which I will tell you right now, is next to never.

We got in a new shipment of All My Layers, which I think are just darling cards, with sweet simple sentiments.  I also love that they are $5 which is totally reasonable (no joke, I went into a fancy paper store the other day and it was $7.95 for a card which just seems excessive.)  I took a moment to send out a card today for a girlfriend just because I missed her (she lives in town but I never see her enough) and I even went to the supermarket to get stamps (there is ONE small supermarket near me that still sells stamps…even my bank doesn’t do it anymore)!   It’s up to our generation to keep this art alive and teach our kids otherwise it’ll be no time before they are baffled by the possibility that something might come in the mailbox that they might have to read.  

I find it fascinating that my teens do ALL of their communicating via snapchat and Instagram stories.  They don’t text, they don’t email.  My 15 year old wasn’t even sure what her email was when I asked her the other day. They don’t use landlines, and they don’t write letters or send cards.  I hate to sound like an old timer, but what is the world coming to?

On a totally other note (and I mean a complete and total pivot), I have recently become obsessed with Burmese food.  Actually, mostly just ONE Burmese dish, and lots of their coconut rice.  It’s a pickled green tea leaf salad and it’s amazing (cabbage, tea leaves, peanuts, some oil and sesame seeds...and other stuff I'm sure.)  I can’t even branch out to order anything different because I’m so obsessed with the salad.  John and I went to lunch today and I ordered the salad and he ordered a curry beef.  She brought this huge salad bowl out, two plates and big serving tongs.  Then I had to inform her that no, I didn’t plan on sharing, and yes, I did plan on eating that thing myself.  And I did. So here’s a nod to Burmese food, which I would have probably never rush to try except my friend served take out from this place at a little impromptu dinner she invited us to.  It was amazing and I was instantly hooked.  What if I hadn’t ever tried it?  I would never have known how delicious it was.  That’s a real argument for trying new things.  I will also note, that I zoned in on this today in yoga too when the teacher specifically said, "today try something you've never tried before, reach for something new."  Side crow here I come.

We got in Lilla P. today, and I know it’s probably the most boring aspect of the group (actually, not probably, it’s most definitely), but the new stretch layering pieces are fantastic. They come in all the usual suspects (black, white and nude) and in a camisole version and the scoop tank version. They are fantastic!  Great length, great stretch fabric, great fit.  These are the perfect foundational pieces I always need and never have handy.   I’ve tried a lot of basics like this, from all kinds of places (including Target, and big box stores), and I’ve been very disappointed overall.   Target actually has a decent tank for sleeping in, but it’s not nice enough to actually wear under something where it might peek out  (like a low cut v-neck or a partially unbuttoned shirt).  These pieces from Lilla P. look super nice, and they wear really well (plus I love that it's primarily cotton.)  There is nothing worse than not having the right layering piece to go under something you have that you want to wear and with all the slightly sheer stuff that comes with spring/summer styles, these are going to be perfect!

One last note....has anyone noticed that it's staying noticeably lighter later?  It's 5:45 p.m. and it's still light outside!!!  That's progress, Spring is definitely coming!

Sarah Liller is my travel-fashion guru.

I might be just a wee bit focused on myself right now, but the new Sarah Liller group is PERFECT to be my travel co-partner in Europe.  I know Sarah’s a big traveler, so maybe that’s why her designs are so travel-friendly.  Her fabrics are so perfect for the suitcase.  They don’t wrinkle, they come out of your bag looking great.   The weight of the fabric is light, but it has enough heft to it that the drape is flattering and you can’t see thru it.   Everything she designs looks put together and like something you could wear to dinner but then somehow you can also pull it off with your tennis shoes during the day.   Miraculous.

I’m wary of shorts.  Always. I didn’t think I looked great in them when I was 25, and now at 48 I’m definitely hesitant (and turns out I
actually DID look good in them at 25 so I should have just enjoyed that more).  I do think there are some shorts though that I can wear and feel like they actually look good now….meaning they are long enough, but not too long because then I just feel like an old lady wearing walking shorts. I’d rather not wear shorts at all if that’s the case.  So this pair by Sarah Liller kind of gets me excited.  These, with the navy/white striped tank, and a great pair of heeled wedges—that’s a perfectly respectable outfit for dining al fresco on vaca. Plus I’d be fine to throw on that same outfit, grab my sunhat and white pumas and walk the city during the day.    I'm going to throw up a picture of the sunhat I just bought for the trip because I'm super digging it and it was only $36.  (Roxy, Sound of the Ocean hat).  It runs small though, the M/L fit well but the S/M would need a  small head because I definitely don't have a big one and I definitely needed the M/L.  FYI, it's on Amazon Prime (actually not where I bought it, but in case you are leaving and need it asap there you go)!

I’m also in love with the ease of her dresses.  I have to do a lot of wash on these long trips to Europe, and their machines aren’t always the best, and half the time the detergent I’m buying is based solely on whether I like the packaging because I have NO idea what it actually says on the box.  It’s probably harsh and extreme, which would be fine for the kid’s clothes but probably not what I would use on mine at home.  My point is though, I’ve taken her stuff traveling and I wash it along with everything else and it stands up just fine.  I’d say better than just fine because it doesn’t fade because I do know that the biggest problem I have with some cottons that I take traveling is the fading (again, probably just because the detergents are harsh and I have to dry it with funky driers, OR out on a clothes line in the hot sun…good for towels, but not so great for black cotton).

My other plug for Sarah’s clothes is that the fabric is the perfect weight.  I HATE when I buy a lightweight summer dress and the fabric clings to my body in the wrong places or literally  settles right between my thighs and butt—it’s not a good look on anyone and it can happen no matter what your size because it's a fabric issue.  Her fabric has enough weight to it that it drapes really well, and I find that it’s lightweight enough to be cool, but heavy enough to actually be flattering.  That’s a tough balance to strike.

I’m kind of a fan of the über cool jumpsuit.  I know most people will see this on the hanger and think, what the what??  It’s a little hapless when you see it on the hanger, and even on the body it’s got a relaxed vibe that people might shy away from because they are worried it makes them look bigger than average, but the drape is so great, I think it's really not the case.  It’s got this cool vibe to it that I love and I think you can play with belts, long necklaces, flip flops or cute hip platform shoes to change the look. 

I'm so excited this group has arrived before I leave, it solves ALL kinds of packing issues for me!  Going somewhere too?  She's got your back.

Why We Buy People Tree

We get excited when we find a designer that we love not just for their great styles, but also for what they stand for, and what they contribute to the world.  People Tree is a perfect example of why we buy AND feel good.  Here's why....

1.   They adhere to Fair Trade practices, with the farmers, worker's and companies in their supply chain.  So we're not just talking about one aspect, we're talking the whole deal.  This ensures that worker's, farmers, artisans...the people making and growing what we need and love, are treated with respect and fair trade and wage practices.  These are the people that are most often discriminated against, and taken advantages of.  The poorest and weakest in countries around the world.  When you know something is produced with and thru Fair Trade, you can feel good.

2.    They use certified organic cotton.   No harmful chemicals, additives, or otherwise toxic stuff can be used in the growing of the cotton they use.  This makes the soil better, makes the air better, and it makes the world better.

3.  People Tree works with different trade groups around the world to produce different products.  They tell you exactly who those groups are, how they are making the product and how their trade agreement helps that particular group or community.  You are in the know, no mystery.

4.  People Tree utilizes special hand skills, giving artisans around the globe the ability to work in their rural communities, utilizing their unique talents such as embroidery and hand weaving.  They honor traditional artisan skills, and help support traditional small rural communities.

5.  People Tree is located in England.  The English are cool.  They have their pulse on wearable fashion that is always balancing the edge of classic and hip perfectly.  It's hard to deny it, they do fashion enviably well.  We don't want to get into a fashion feud, but we'll give them the props due....English women always look pretty fantastic.

November 27: Beauty, Taking Action and Cyber Monday Re-do

First off, our random things to love is ART, in all forms.  The picture on our header under random things to love is of a flower that I bought that is literally a piece of art -- it is so amazing.  Among all the other more “regular” flowers at one of my favorite flower stores was this incredible oddity, and it is the prettiest thing that I appreciate every time I walk by it.  I get a lot of enjoyment out of this beautiful piece of art—and all for $20.  You can find beautiful art in so many things, and the more we surround ourselves with beautiful art, the better.  We are so lucky that we get to enjoy these things.  Marie Kondo (organizational pro and writer) I think was the one who said you should surround yourself only with things you love and that spark joy.  It seems like gratitude for all the beauty in the world is to cultivate it at every opportunity you have...the flowers you buy, the clothes you buy, all the details of the life you create for yourself and family.

My yoga wisdom today was also translated to our call to action.  Ironically, the call to action is ACTION.  In class today the instructor was talking about how there were only two choices, action and inaction.  I loved that because basically it just cuts thru all the intentions, “I wanted to”, “almost did” and “was going to”.  You either do it, or you don’t.  If I had a dollar for all my good intentions.  Well, you know.  Sometimes you just have to ask yourself, what did I actually DO at the end of the day? So, at the end of today, I will look back and hopefully be happy with all the actions I took, and I'll ignore all the intentions I had because in the end they don't really matter.

Spring Dreams and Stylish Accents

I am sick of puffer coats. I am also sick of water-resistant shoes. I need the weather to cooperate with my style goals, and give me a perfect outfit day - cool, but not cold, and dry!  Bring on the January sunshine please! 

Speaking of style goals, we're loving these beautiful new scarves from Banaris - just the thing to brighten up any look with spring color and natural beauty!!! An instant wardrobe-freshener!!!

My personal, pro-active style plan this week is going to be: to assemble a few pre-styled outfits on hangers in the front of my closet so I can grab-and-go, with no muss, fuss, or clothes tantrums which are one of the B.O.M.E.s. (Banes Of My Existence). Why haven't I done this before?!

My New Obsession

Hello again and so many apologies for the lapse in posts lately - we have all been so busy around here that writing anything besides HELP! would have taken too long. :)

But now there's a quick lull before the weekend list begins, so let's all chill out and talk about fashion for a minute, wanna? It would be a treat to leave all the daily chores and heavy stuff aside, and just dish about the clothes, are you with me? I thought you would be!

k, first up: my new obsession. FESTIVE JACKETS.

I have always loved menswear, since the 70's when I was a girl and would button my shirts all the way up to the top, driving my more groovy hippy mother to distraction. I parted my hair severely in the middle and took a minimalist route to fashion, which is very au courrant, now. My mother thought me very uncool, but I was actually 40 years ahead of my time.

But these days - WOW, the fashion world is saturated with menswear-inspired clothing! It's everywhere! Blazers, jackets, trenches, collared shirts, jeans, suits - all must-haves, in every color and print. The wide-spread availability of my personal style does not make me jealous, on the contrary - it thrills me no end! And affords me countless variations on the same, flattering, totally rockin', classic-with-a-modern-edge, super-cool theme! 

In the spirit of which - enter The Festive Jacket.  

I am obsessed. I have always been obsessed, they just haven't really been available outside vintage shops, where the jackets I want are all from the actual 1960's or '70's and the fabric is disgusting, they smell and they don't fit. NOW there are replications everywhere - in surprisingly cool fabrics. I am particularly fond of a bright print paired with distressed denim. It's Lauren Bacall-meets-Charlie Girl-meets-Heidi Klum-meets-Parker Posey. In other words - it's AWESOME. 

Check out my latest favorite: my Crane Blazer. I had to have it, I bought it, I'm in love with it. Now I'm looking for other cool blazers like this one.   
It just screams playful sophistication to me. A breezy, confident jacket in a lightweight viscose that has the perfect drape. A classic silhouette in a modern, artful pattern of beautiful cranes - symbolic of longevity and prosperity - in classic colors that look great with different accessories.I love to wear a splash of red lipstick with the crane jacket, go minimal, or dress it up with a long silver necklace - it looks great with my hair down, in a ponytail, or a bun.It has a relaxed kind of cool polish, and one that flatters the figure. Is there any wonder why I'm obsessed? Plus - it's a perfect look for any age, trust me - I'm 51! 

My other recent fashion moment was in last year's beautiful Velvet jacket. I had visions then of rocking it with a graphic tee and jeans, because it is so glam and when I first saw it was not only completely covered in clear glass beads but ALSO has gun-metal bronzed studs mixed among them -  I thought This jacket rocks! It's like Kate Moss at a cool party in Paris!!! I saw her in my mind wearing it with ripped skinny jeans and a high heel, her hair kind of messy, and smokey eye makeup. I certainly did not recreate that look, but I did my at-home version, turned up the music, and had a delicious beer to debut it in. So fun! (You can read about that extra-fun evening here.) 

There is a lot of velvet out there right now, it's totally on-trend - and for the first time ever, I'm really digging it! Before, velvet clothing was too dated, too hippy, too Stevie Nicks in a bad way. But now - it's been updated, refreshed with clean lines and cut in modern silhouettes that toughen it up just enough.  

Like the velvet bomber jacket. So many cute options of this silhouette right now, tons of little sporty luxe jackets that look great with jeans and sneakers. I'm usually not one to wear actual sportswear - I don't care for sports as a rule, and unlike most of the world I don't own a lot of nylon, but I can get behind this trend. It's comfortable, it's cool, it's edgy but sophisticated, with a touch of feminine charm. What's not to love? 

In the shop right now we have the incredibly cool and totally posh Prairie Underground Brocade Spencer Jacket! I am SO crazy about this piece - love to style it different ways like over a silk top with long lace cuffs that poke out and ripped jeans, very 1760. :) 

Or, worn open over a tight, striped tee, again with distressed jeans. (I think I may be as obsessed with ripped jeans right now as i am with jackets - a killer combo, IMO!) By the way - pssst: The Prairie Brocade Jacket is on sale right now, size L and XL! Hurry before it's gone! And how cute would it be with some super-skinnies like these?! And with a beautiful luxe scarf like this one from EF?! The whole ensemble is very "Rock and Roll English Prep School" or "Harry Potter meets The Killers". Just too cool for (wizard) school! 

I am so looking forward to a new year of style. I have a feeling my penchant for jackets will only increase as spring rolls around and layering creatively will become the name of the game. Until then...

Celebrate!

"Because there is always joy." My new mantra.

I was watching a movie called "Into the Whirlwind" where a character in the most dire of circumstances (and I mean dire, I'm talking The Purge in 1930's Russia) is asked by another suffering prisoner how he can bear his losses and pain, and he says simply "There is always joy." And, there it is. The switch of life. The ability to choose joy. It's right there, waiting to be chosen. No matter what the hardships, there still is always joy. 

So I choose to celebrate this season. I am creating joy, all around me, for everyone. I will greet every stranger with a light and friendly heart, I will speak only kind and thoughtful words, I will look for new opportunities with courage and as much grace as I can muster. This is enough. This is reason enough to celebrate, come join me will you? Let's raise a glass together - of wine, of cranberry juice, of Martinelli's sparkling apple juice, of cocoa - any glass at all - and let's CLINK, toast and drink to each other's health and happiness. xoxoxo

Sweet September Style

It hardly needs saying that we LOVE Fall fashion. Who doesn't? After the long summer months of heat we are ready for that cool bite in the air, that crisp breeze that promises a cozy season ahead. And with that we start rotating our summer clothes out and transitional pieces in. First up? Jeans. 

Now is the perfect time to restock our denim wardrobe with fall's latest jeans and leggings, and we're crushed-out on these amazing high-waisted Rocket jeans in black from Citizens - they are gorgeous! So comfortable, so sexy, and the ultimate in versatility. We can pair them with so many things - we love them with fall tunics - like this gorgeous midnight blue Gretchen tunic! So cute with the sleek black jeans, that sweet neckline and beautiful knit take this look to the next level. Just add some great boots for fall-perfection! 

Or go earth-tones and pair them with Prairie's fabulous Feint Blouse in Shitake - the clean lines of this top with its subtle military flair is too cute this fall with a little coppery bling and a great bag - to die for! 

A chic look in fall colors would be with MOL's luxe cashmere crew in Forest green - so yummy -  and layered under her incredible leather jacket. 

We're so ready for September, October, November - this is one of our favorite times of year, not only in fashion but in nature - Oregon will soon be dressed in her autumnal best, and we plan on doing the same!!!

Autumnal Awesomeness

Hooray, it's fall fashion time!!! We can't let the biggest fashion season of the year go by without several huzzahs and a bottle of bubbly popped open, now can we? And in light of today's eclipse (or in the lack thereof) - we really have a reason to celebrate!!! So huzzah, huzzah, clink clink and down the bubbly - and let's go shopping for fall's finest fashion!!! 

Ok, let's talk luxury. And by that I mean cashmere. Is there anything better for fall and the winter months ahead? These sweeeeeeet little cashmere shrugs from Tees by Tina are our new BFFF's - Best Friends For Fall! Light, breezy - they ward off any cool evening chill, and set the tone for fall's knits and wraps.  The perfect transitional piece!!! We are totally in looove with this sweet little ballet-pink cashmere dream! 

Pair that pink beauty with a simple white tee like this one from Eileen Fisher. This soft, organic slub cotton  classic will be an MVP in your year-round wardrobe. Wear it over some slender jeans like these from Citizens of Humanity for a dressed down-with-a-touch-of-luxury transitional look!

A + for A-Line

Ladies, can I get a hallelujah for the A-Line Skirt?! I have decided that a knee-length a-line skirt is one of the MOST important pieces in our year-round wardrobes! And I do not bestow that honor lightly. A design has to earn that title - and the a-line skirt most certainly does! Here's why:

It is always age-appropriate.

Point number one, and in my view - being a 50 year old woman who knows what she's talking about and who learned in the hard way - the most important point of all! A too-short, too-tight skirt is not cute at all IMO, but really not cute on anyone. And it leaves no room for elegance, for class, for charm. And that is what an a-line skirt brings to the table. Instant class - a flattering skirt that is feminine without being fussy, a chic-vintage-inspired silhouette that adds a touch of whimsy, which adds character to your look. 

It is flattering on EVERYONE!!! No matter what body type you have, an a-line skirt will look good on you. It narrows the waist, smooths out the hips, and adds a sweet swing to your walk as it moves. It shows off the lower leg to perfection, elongating the line of the body and making us all look taller and more slender. WIN! 

It is amazingly versatile. The a-line skirt goes with anything. It dresses up and it dresses down. It goes from work to dinner to school, to a night out on the town. Dress it down with slide on sneaks and a striped tank. So cute. Dress it up with a heel and a silk tank - gorgeous! There are a myriad of ways to rock the a-line - I am LOVING that stunning neutral look above. The chic nude color palette with that pop of fresh white in the shirt, and the summer skin. Shorts can also be confining - but not the a-line skirt! With a swish and a swirl you are calm, cool, and very collected. Not to mention CUTE!!!

We are over the moon about our new summer arrivals! This is one of our favorite times of year - when the rain takes a break and the sun comes out and best of all - WE CAN WEAR OUR SUMMER WARDROBE!!! Take a look a few of our favorite new pieces, and imagine how you could switch them up to create even more looks! Fires, Cooking & Remote Control Concussions

It snowed yesterday in Eugene…..SNOW. Whhhhaaaatttt?? Just sprinkles, but still. It’s March and we really are officially OVER all things winter and winter-esq.   We are ready for some rejuvenating spring weather, sunshine and crocuses only please! “Totally over it Tuesday” seemed like an appropriate promo to have because we need to THINK SPRING, for our sanity's sake.

Today’s hygge contributions are a few different aspects of what are big time essentials in Denmark. First, they are BIG (actually huge) on making fires. Cozy in the winter of course, but spring and summer outdoor fires are also key. Imagine cozied up around an outdoor fire, with a stack of blankets nearby to wrap yourself in, and a warm drink at the ready. Throw in a few friends and some yummy food and you have a very lovely event. There’s really NEVER a time that a candle and a fire doesn’t make it more cozy. Something about the flicker of flames I guess, it’s soothing, warming, and awakens some basic instinctual comfort.

Cooking is another big part of setting the cozy Danish setting. Not the quick 30 minute meal, the kind of slow cooking that takes an entire Saturday afternoon, and the process itself becomes part of the comforting, nurturing aspect, even more than the food itself. It’s the applesauce slow cooking on the stove and the smell of orchard and cinnamon all day in the house….it’s the delicious smell of a stew on the stove, or bread rising. It makes you feel good, cared for, and content. All these super quick, speedy meals that we knock out to accommodate our crazy schedules are great (and certainly convenient), but they don’t really compete with spending hours cooking something, the smells filling the house, and the anticipation of the meal that culminates. No one has time to do it all that often, but when you do, it’s restorative and nurturing. Two key things we need in our life.

We are still starting the occasional fire at night because it’s still very much cold outside (and often rainy), but I can’t wait for it to get warmer and dry out so we can start evening fires outside and watch the sunset. I’ll cuddle into this Prairie Cloak Hoodie which I’m in love with (the gorgeous sky blue is heavenly), and the perfect weight for late spring and early summer evenings.

Since all of the above sounds dreamy, BUT also unrealistic on an everyday basis (to say the least), I’m planning my perfect Saturday afternoon already.  It's going to be rainy here so the afternoon will include a nice cozy fire, baking some gluten free bread (which may or may not turn out decent because the word gluten free and bread don't go together well), and some kind of yummy bean soup (preferably one that smells good).   I’ll add a nice red wine into the picture, and while I’m at it, I’m going to visualize the kids all mellow and sweet, perhaps an afternoon family movie while things are cooking and baking. No one will fight, Ava will actually WANT to be at home (vs. someplace more fun with her friends), there will be no arguing about which movie to watch, and no one will throw a remote. I only feel the need to specifically mention no remote throwing because Romeo threw one last night (theoretically he was trying to “pass it” to Gia) and it clocked John in the head. Hard. That did NOT go over well. That won’t happen this Saturday though. It’s going to be all hygge, all the time. I’m excited already.

24 hour PJ's, Candles & Scarves

It’s pajama day at Romeo’s school tomorrow.  I had to text his best friend's mom to get the “assurance” he needed that he wasn’t going to be the only one showing up in his jammies.  He came into my room and said, “I got a good plan (which sound like pwan).  I’m going to wear my school jammies for real jammies at night, and then I won’t have to change in the morning.”  Good thinking.  It’ll be a 24 hour pj bonanza.  Truth be told, I’ve slept in a Tees by Tina tank, and then worn the same one the next day…for real.  And yes, it IS in fact, sort of convenient.  
 
Today is the first day of March, and the first day to start operation March Mission.  A month to restore and renew ourselves.  We’re going to divine some simple pleasures that create a warm and nurturing environment.  Helen Russell, in her book “Year of living Danishly”, describes hygge as “taking pleasure in the presence of gentle soothing things.”  Doesn’t that sound lovely?  That sounds like something nurturing to the soul, and we’re going to pick apart all kinds of great ideas and tips to that end.    

For March we used Danish hygge as inspiration for the general concept of a nurturing, soothing philosophy of life, which we want to be the backdrop of everything. We also want to create a lovely, organized, physical environment that is a thing of beauty and comfort.   Lastly, we want to manage our time with awareness so that we can find new ways to grow and be stimulated (since after all, it’s spring—the time of growth). We want to be the best dressed while doing all that.  Seems like a tall order, but hey, there are 31 days in March, and we are game.

So today as we start our quest for hygge, it’s all about candles. Candles? Yes. Who knew they were so important? I love candles, and every once in awhile I buy a really fantastic one, more often they are gifted. I enjoy it when I burn them, but can’t say I’ve put a whole lot of thought into it one way or another. Well, guess what? The Danish have, and their use of candles surpasses none, and it is central to their orchestration of the hygge environment. Ever since I read about the importance of candles I’ve been burning them left and right, and I have to say, it DOES really add to a sense of peacefulness. Apparently the Danish light candles all the time, even in schools….fire hazards be damned. It’s very hygge to do so. I love scented candles, but even if you aren’t burning a scent, the flicker of the candle is soothing, you have to admit, and it provides a glow that is sort of contagiously peaceful. I’ve been using candles liberally during dinner, and the kids are crazy about it, instant “specialness” factor.  One of my favorites is the Capri Blue Volcano candle because it smells amazing and it's not a gazillion dollars (just $27.50 on Amazon).

The whole notion of a nurturing, cozy, and soothing goal, has me also thinking about my favorite things that I wear on my body that bring me the same feelings. The first one that popped into my head was scarves.   I wear them ALL the time…all year round really. They are always a comfort to me; there is something inherently cozy about wrapping something around my neck, even when it’s not cold. I’ve got a little Diane Keaton in me I think.

I’ll sign off with a bit of wonderful wisdom from my hippy dippy friend (who is the most delightful combo of a badass businesswoman, and hippy soul nurturer.) Her advice was to fix the problem in front of you, and not to worry about the problems that haven’t happened yet. Isn’t it insane how simple genius can be? Yes, indeed…deal with what is right in front of you, and don’t spend your energy playing the “what if” “when it” or “if it” game. I’m queen of the over-worry, and that my dears, is NOT hygge.

A Few of Our Favorite Things

We're getting in the spirit. And in the spirits, lol! I had the best glass of red wine yesterday! In fact it was so good I had another one. "Take two, they're small" doesn't really apply here, BUT if you add "....in comparison to the entire barrel." it works great. And we all know that somewhere in the middle of glass two you start thinking things are very "remarkable". At least I do. And of course I then remark upon it, and this particular remarkable thing was the color of the wine itself. Red wine is beautiful - such a rich color, a deep ruby red that calls to mind jewels, royalty, ripe fruits, rich seasonal velvets, a crackling fire. Hold it up to the light and it GLOWS - its fluidity catching the light in the glass - it also sloshes, which is what I would

have done if I'd had a third glass, lol!

As it was it got me appreciating the glorious color of wine, and of the holidays ahead, and I realized we had quite a few wine-colored things in the shop! Perfect for the season, and perfect to drink wine in. (It won't show!) I truly love the Prairie Underground Cloak Hoodie in Beet. Talk about a holiday hoodie, this gorgeous topper is in the most amazing color and with Prairie's tailoring and lush details - all in organic cotton - it could not be more perfect for doing holiday shopping in, for visiting friends and relatives in, for stuffing our faces with thanksgiving

Pina Coladas

"If you like Pina Coladas, and gettin' caught in the rain..." that song from the 70's conjures up some Santa Monica moments for me, as a child I must have heard it a thousand times on the radio. The only thing was I didn't understand what personal ads were, or what cheating on your "lady" was, or anything else that the song is really about. Back then I just thought it was about drinking punch and hanging out on the beach. Such innocence!

Lovely, Lovely Layers

Ok, time for an extemporaneous rave about...scarves. To me, a scarf is much more than a scarf, in fact that word does not do this multi-purpose, must-have accessory justice. "Scarf" sounds like what a dog does to its food. "Scarves" is a bit better with the slightly sultry "vvvv" sound, but only a bit. It still has that awful double consonant at the beginning that sounds like something caught at the back of the throat. Like a glottle stop. Or a gag reflex. Sc...sc...this sound is not worthy of these essential, fashionable, beautiful, colorful, and downright sexy pieces of our year-round wardrobes. 

 

Scarves bring so much WOW into our looks - interchangeably, effortlessly, truly the ultimate in versatility - they deserve a name more befitting their rather royal status. Maybe just call them what they are: lovely layers. Cozy clouds of beauty. Ugh. That doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Ah well, scarves it is, and SPEAKING OF...let's look at a few of my favorite Banaris scarves that just came in the shop!!!! 

I got really excited when I saw this collection. Banaris really does it right! They have the most original, beautiful, hip and happy prints I've ever seen! Every season they surprise and delight me. I love the small polka dot scarf with its pastel rainbow of pretty dots and soft, voluminous body. It really is like a cozy cloud of beauty the way it sits at the throat, adding a lovely volume, soft color, and cozy charm. I also looove the pink stripe. That color is just the perfect pink, and the silk has a soft shimmer that captivates me. I'd love to wear this beauty with a jean jacket then turn around and rock it with a feminine dress. So many ways to wear them! Another original and beautiful scarf is this multi-colored one. I've never seen a print like this and I adore it! In fact I am really drawn to each print with polka dots in this collection, they are just too cool!

So give yourself a valentine and pick up one or two or three of these lovely layers for your spring wardrobe. And seeing as they always fit, no matter what, give one as a gift to your favorite lady valentines! xoxoxo DR

Resurfaced and feeling all grown up!

So you know how I'm a big sucker for scientific studies….especially the ones that promise youth and happiness :-).  I bought this Philosphy resurface


"kit" and got to say, I added myself to the list of "100% of the people" and the "84% of the people" because I did it last night and this morning my skin does look pretty fantastic.  I bought mine on Amazon (because I use the Prime overnight since immediate gratification is always more fun).  It was way cheaper on Amazon too I might add, but now that i have I I would have paid more for it anyway (knowing how much I like it).  So there you go, advice on skin products you didn't ask for and didn't know you needed (but maybe you kind of do)!!

 

I also got this new Eileen Fisher cardigan, which I feel like it is a grown up and sophisticated version of my beloved Hard Tail Slouchy Cardigan.  

It's cozy…soft, I can throw it on with everything, I love the two-tone detailing and seam work.  It's pretty all around awesome.  Signed, ME {lv}                               

 

The Perfect Gift

 

It's officially time to kick it into gear and get fun, fabulous, and festive gifts for the ones we love (and just a couple for ourselves, we promise!).

I have to admit I love shopping for gifts, I don't try to think too hard about it, I just grab whatever seems agreeable to that person, and if possible, make it something they would not necessarily get for themselves. For some that might mean a simple, inexpensive and unique vintage item. For others it might mean something natural and eco-friendly. For everyone else there is cashmere and sequins, right? Everybody loves those! Fortunately Melange is chock-full of cashmere and sequins right now! I'm in heaven touching the luxuriously soft cashmere wraps, throws, ponchos and scarves. Do I have to wear anything else? I know for a fact that the lucky ladies on my list that receive one of these beauties will make that certain squeal of joy upon opening them that means OH MY GOD YOU MADE MY CHRISTMAS.  I know that is how I would feel if I received one! My other super-love as far as sequins go are these incredible mesh knit sequin scarves from Elizabeth Gillett. No one can resist the sparkle and shine of these holiday beauties! The black is just too cool for school, sure to sass up any look from a leather jacket to a holiday dress. The gold is like a champagne dream, so beautiful with creamy silk tops, and the RED. OMG. I can't rip my eyes away! Red mesh and silver and gold sequins = Holiday Perfection. One for me, one for her, two for me...you get the picture. We love this company so much. Indigenous really lights the way to sustainable, eco-friendly, artisan-sustaining fair trade, (and makes us look FANTASTIQUE in the process!). Arriving today is an exciting new collection from this fabulous company, and we can't wait to unpack it. The softest tunics, ponchos, gloves and skirts in luscious, fresh, organic cotton. Indigenous uses the natural color of the cotton whenever possible, and only uses low-impact dyes with no heavy metals for the rest. They support the local artisans in South America and the communities they live in. As they put it on their website:

The Polished Poncho

Forget the pashmina, the new poncho is in town! We have fallen head-over-heels in love with the incredible array of colorful cashmere ponchos arriving in the shop! And really, who wouldn't?! What is not to love about wrapping yourself up in pure heaven? So soft, so stylish, and so easy to wear -they are a dream-come-true, for anyone! Can't Get Enough of: Cashmere

I think there might be a new season in the year. Honestly, thanks to climate change we now have a fifth season when summer hangs on, and on...sunny day after sunny day, but the air has lost the oppressive heat of late summer, and has a fresher feeling of fall. This new season is a relief in many ways. Relief from the heat, certainly, but also a relief from our tired summer wardrobes. Fall has always been the favorite time of year in the fashion world because it combines so many textures and deliciously soft knits, allowing us to layer up , snuggle up, and look amazing. Unfortunately in the pacific northwest fall also usually means a lot of rain and increasingly cold weather. There are usually only about two weeks of that ideal sunny/crisp weather that lets you wear your leather boots and wool coats without getting them wet. Again, thanks to global warming we Oregonians now have a much bigger window within which to rock the fall fashions without the soggy side effects. And no frizzy hair! Hooray! Here are a few of our favorite new things to celebrate this beautiful beginning to fall. The wonderful Grace cardigans from Vintageous are the perfect thing to pair with a sleek tee or tank, some seriously sexy jeans, and a creamy, dreamy cashmere scarf from Elizabeth Gillett. Iris Apfel: Fashion Icon, Fashion Maverick, and in her own words a "Geriatric Starlet"

Iris! The amazing artist and fashion icon Iris Apfel is my new favorite style star. At 94 this New York artist still influences the world with her unique combinations of INCREDIBLE collections of clothes and jewelry she's amassed over the last 8 decades. Nobody does ensembles like Iris, I think it's safe to say! The world needs more people like her, artists that aren't interested in what's "pretty" but what is interesting. Curious people that care about history, but look to the future. Iris is a conduit for all of us - a link from the beautiful, gorgeous, ornate, frivolous, exquisite past, to the exciting, liberated, colorful future she would design herself if she could. Iris is an artist who lives her work, who spreads color and common sense wherever she goes. Thank you Iris Apfel, for giving us all a look at the possibilities of things. For the endless expression of joy and appreciation that you make, just by being yourself everyday!

Tell it like it is.

Thank god for 12 year old girls and their brutal honesty.

We had two parties back to back on Saturday.  John graciously took the kids for an activity in the morning and I got some work done and then tried to pull my outfit together for the parties.  It was tricky…first party was a 13 year old child’s birthday party but with adults hanging around and drinking wine.  Second party was a birthday party for our friend turning 40—evening party at their house.  So I must have tried on 10 different things, but was having trouble with one outfit that could seamlessly make the transition.  I had on a beautiful Corey Lynn Coltar dress from years ago…but then realized that it had WAY too much cleavage going on for a kid’s birthday party.  So that came off.  I decided on an OLD Burning Torch strapless dress that seemed perfect….sort of casual in nature, but the strapless aspect made it feel dressier, so I could carry it into the evening.  I hadn’t worn it in YEARS, so that sounded nice too, resurrect it sort of speak.  Plus it’s darn cute.

 I put it on, got my hair done, and generally felt pulled together.  Was ready for action. 

Then the kids all got home, and we had two minutes for me to gather up Ava and take off again.   Ava walks into my bedroom takes one look at my dress and without skipping a beat she says “wowoooooohhhh, hold up, you can’t wear THAT, you’ve got fat squishing over the top.”.

Ooohhhh, ouch.   That kinda hurt.

The funny part is, I KNEW it already, but I was hoping that no one else really was going to notice.  The dress elastic around the bust was a little too tight and it cut into  the top of my bust creating spillage (and not in the good way like cleavage spillage…it was more like weird underarm/boob fat spillage). 

 So here’s the reminder that strapless gets tricky as you get older….that underarm squish and back fat squish are issues even if you are a small person.  It’s an age thing, sucks, but we’ve got to face it.  Thank god I have a 12 year old who isn’t interested in sparing my feelings. 

 I changed, wore this perfectly acceptable chevron Beth Bowley strapless dress (again, resurrected from years ago) that wasn’t as tight across the top and gave me far less squishing in.  Ava gave me her approval.

 Here’s also a sidebar reminder that we owe it to our sisters (and I mean that figuratively) to make sure they don’t leave the house with unsightly “stuff”.  I was at a picnic at the start of school, and saw my friend from a distance, and eventually she walked and talked her way over to me….I took one look at her and spotted a big old lipstick smudge and made her fix it immediately.  What the what?  How is it possible she spoke with 10 different women on the way over and not ONE of them said anything??  That’s not right.   Unless you want to find that one day you have toilet paper hanging from your pants  or a huge piece of spinach in your teeth, you better pay it forward and alert your fellow “sisters” when they are in need!

Hot to Cold: Summer to Fall Fashion (and why we love back to school so much)

Three blessed words: BACK TO SCHOOL! (cue parents cheering) Huzzah, huzzah!!! This year is a special year, because school begins on August 27th instead of sometime in September. My daughter would not use the word "special", but I certainly am! It's been a looong summer, although the last two weeks haven't been as hard as the first two were. This was the year of the teen getting a summer job or volunteer position, and she resisted as only a teen can. We finally managed to get her out of her room and into a barrista program at a local cafe where teens can learn job skills, but it was a rocky start and summer lost its charm almost from the get-go. Sigh. But now...school begins in three days. :) Which means I can count on a quiet, clean house for approx 6 hours a day. Which is HUGE, as all parents know. 

Thank goodness I have fashion to distract me from domestic woes. And fall is the BEST time of year! And late summer/early fall is one of my favorite times of year for layering opportunities. When better to combine the light, silky tops, dresses, and skirts with the creamy coziness of fall? The combinations are endless and fabulous. I love a lace top under a fall jacket or cardigan, summer jeans with a creamy cashmere, or a chunky knit with a pleated skirt. Though the summer sun still shines, we feel a delicious crispness in the air, and the leaves are just starting to turn, promising colder weather ahead. Meanwhile we are going to do two things: 1. Wear new fall fashion with our favorite summer pieces and 2. Get the teen some school supplies.

summer mojo, cashmere, and a planner's revenge

You’re killing my Summer mojo.  That’s the look we get when people walk in from the 95  degree day, before they’ve adjusted to the AC blast, when the first thing their eyeballs fixate on is a nice cozy cashmere sweater.   “HEY, it’s still Summer!”  We’ve gotten all variations of that statement, and all kinds of snarky comments and attitudes to go along with.  It’s the equivalent of the Christmas decorations in October which gets so undies in a twist.  Relentless commercialism?  Maybe, or perhaps someone is just giving you time to think about whether you want to do a themed Christmas tree this year--and yes, that can take me awhile to think thru.    Here’s the thing….I’ve come to a realization, I NEED all that extra time to pull it together (whether it is my fall wardrobe, Halloween, or Christmas).  I can’t start thinking about Christmas AFTER Thanksgiving….uh, seriously?  That just isn’t enough time to pull it all together (and yes, maybe my Martha Stewart-esq image of Christmas is overblown and 6 months of planning is overboard, but no matter what I know I need more than 3 weeks which is barely enough time to find a wreath I like).    I have to make room in my brain for the idea, the planning and the execution, and yes, that really does necessitate thinking about it before Halloween.    I suppose I could whip it all together on the fly with a whole lot of stress, but where’s the fun in that?  What’s that they say?….. it’s not the destination, it’s the journey (and anticipation)--it's half the fun!!  Let's face it, the world is run by planners. 

So that’s the deal, we start fall shopping early because quite honestly despite the relentless Summer heat, we CAN imagine that very shortly there will in fact be cold (and very cold) days and when they come I want to have my wardrobe nicely mapped out (and I need TIME to do that).  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been the girl in flip flops come October 1^st, who suddenly realizes “oh crap, it’s cold…and these are starting to look weird”, but it’s just not in my blood to be that care free.  I like a plan, preferably one that involves cashmere and great boots.  I have FUN planning.

Plus, my theory is that designers always come out of the gate at the beginning of the season with their best stuff.   It’s the WOW stuff, that keeps you hooked to the line for the rest of the season.  So you grab it early, or you wait and miss it and get stuck with whatever is left.

So that’s it, the reason to shop early.   We’re not trying to ruin anyone’s last run of Summer fun, but for the planners out there (and you know who you are), don’t let those haters hate….come the beginning of October they are going to wonder why their size is sold out, or their favorite color, and you'll have sweet revenge because you'll be WEARING IT!

Fresh and Flirty: The Circle Skirt is Back to Stay

The vintage look is SO hot right now, but it's not the only thing that's hot: it's been 95 degrees or more for over two weeks here! So I was double thrilled to find the perfect circle-skirt sundress to wear, which is not only a very sassy retro-style, but keeps me as cool as a cucumber. Plus, it makes you feel so girly! I love the feeling of the full skirt swishing against my legs, it's like wearing my own fan.
